Filipino Pride

Filipino-Norwegian kite boarding ace Christian Tio isn’t settling for less when he competes against the world’s best in the Youth Olympic Games in October in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tio, the only representative in the Asia and Oceanic regions in the YOG, has his sights set on the gold medal. Christian Tio earned the lone Youth Olympic Games spot after ruling the Iconic Kitesurfing Youth Olympic Asia/Oceania Qualifiers Sunday in Pranburi, Thailand.

Tio, one of the Philippines’ fast-rising stars in kite boarding, overcame stiff competition that gathered the best 15 to 18-year-old kite boarders in the continent during the five-day event. The frizzle-haired Tio, who hails from Boracay Island where he was taught by his mother to kite at 7 years old before participating in his first kitesurfing competition against adults at 10, thinks living in a tropical country will be his edge heading into his stiffest challenge yet.

Tio, who is coming off a victorious stint in the Boracay leg of the Philippine Kiteboarding Tour just last month, gained steam in the last two days of competition while Rupchorn wavered. During his interview, he said “The target is to get that gold, to win,” Tio, who has a much laid back demeanor, isn’t unfazed despite facing a tall order to win it all. “I don’t really feel any pressure. I just feel happy to be representing my country,” he added.

Tio, who turns 18 on Wednesday, flies back to Boracay Tuesday night. He is scheduled to be in Norway next month for an event which he also intends to use as part of his buildup for the YOG. Mariska Wildenberg clinched the women’s crown while Remel Rentillo, also part of the national youth kite boarding team pool which will compete in Thailand, won the youth category. Bong Fernando and Anastasia Sashchenko ruled the hang-time events. The freestyle competition, Tio’s pet event, was cancelled due to unfavorable conditions. The price money was shared among the top finishers.

Tio, meanwhile, bested an elite pool and topped the men’s Twin Tip, which is aimed at gearing him up for the Youth Olympic qualifying tournament in Thailand next march. Boracay is a staple venue for the annual kite boarding tour because of the usually strong and consistent winds in the island.
